Aviir Inc. assists in the risk assessment and management of cardiovascular disease by delivering innovative laboratory testing services.
Aviir was founded in 2005 by a group of cardiologists and researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine, dedicated to the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndromes. The company discovers, develops and commercializes diagnostic laboratory tests employing the latest technologies with a focus on cardiovascular disease along with related metabolic disorders. Beyond these novel tests, an extensive menu of standard of care cardiovascular & metabolic tests are provided through the company’s CLIA certified laboratory based in Irvine, CA.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, yet it is largely preventable. The American Heart Association has recently estimated that by 2030 over 40% of the US population will have some form of cardiovascular disease.1 Aviir’s vision is to aid in the diagnosis, monitoring and assessment of cardiovascular disease by providing comprehensive laboratory testing, well-designed reports and services that physicians need to promote behavioral changes in patients that are at risk. Ongoing development is a top priority to add proprietary, novel tests that will assist in defining and assessing those patients that are truly high risk for the development of a cardiac event, stroke or insulin resistance.
Advancing Cardiometabolic Risk Assessment, Monitoring and Prevention
Our test menu provides a comprehensive perspective on risk assessment and monitoring of overall cardiometabolic health. Aviir provides physicians and patients with essential information that can be used to define an individualized plan for improved prevention of risk factors, along with appropriate treatment of established risk factors – diminishing cardiovascular disease and improving the management of related conditions.
However, the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease requires much more – the accurate classification of risk and associated motivation for treatment plan compliance is vital.
Reclassifying Risk
Improving cardiovascular risk assessment is a major objective for Aviir. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that 58% of all cardiac events happen to individuals with only 0 or 1 of the traditional risk factors and therefore were not considered to be high risk using current assessment methods.2 For patients defined in the intermediate risk group by traditional risk factors, further testing is needed to assess risk status. Aviir now offers a proprietary blood-based test that will objectively define an intermediate risk patient’s true risk, regardless of risk factor history and current intermediate risk classification.
The TruRisk™ assessment reclassifies those individuals within the intermediate risk group that are actually at high risk. The test provides an objective, absolute risk score that translates to the percent chance of the patient experiencing a cardiac event (myocardial infarction or unstable angina requiring hospitalization) in the next 5 years. The reclassification allows for proper management and treatment that could aid in the prevention of future cardiac events.
Motivating Behavioral Changes
Aviir paves the way to effective patient communication and improved management of cardiovascular risk factors. Physicians and patients will be armed with information that promotes the behavioral changes required for the improved prevention of risk factors along with compliance to the appropriate treatment of established risk factors.
